Course Information
Description An overview of the production of documents, tables and graphics.

Corequisites/Prerequisites Business Information Management 1 (BIM 1) is a course designed to equip students with foundational knowledge and skills for managing information and technology in a business context. It covers topics such as using software for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations, as well as understanding how businesses utilize technology to manage data. The course also explores business principles, including starting a business, finances, marketing, and customer service.
Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will gain hands-on experience using software applications to create and manage various business documents, including word processing documents, spreadsheets, databases, and electronic presentations. 

  2. Students will explore how businesses handle vast amounts of information, including the identification of information requirements and the design of information management systems. 

  3. Students will learn to apply their skills to solve business-related problems, such as those related to budgeting, payroll, and inventory management. 

  4. Students will learn the principles of data analysis, including how to access and retrieve data from database systems, and how to interpret data mining findings. 

  5. Students will explore the key uses of hardware and software in a business setting and learn how to choose the right technology to meet a company's needs. 

  6. Students will develop strong communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate effectively in teams and to resolve conflicts. 

  7. Students will learn to collaborate effectively with others, contributing positively to team projects and working effectively in group settings. 

  8. Students will learn to use analytical tools to address business and information technology issues. 

  9. Students will be introduced to the issues and challenges of managing global enterprises and applying their knowledge in a global context. 

  10. Students will explore ethical considerations and legal aspects related to business operations. 

  11. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities like career and technical student organizations to enhance their leadership and teamwork skills. 

  12. Students will learn to use presentation software effectively, including incorporating visuals and utilizing various design elements.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies
  1. Grades should communicate student progress

  2. If a student has an excused absence then a two CLASS PERIOD extension will be given for a test or a class assignment unless the 6 weeks is ending. After that, a 70 will be the highest grade a student can receive.  

  3. Students are required to complete work that is missed due to absences. Students will be allowed a minimum of one day for each day absent to make up work. High school students on a block schedule will be allowed a minimum of one class period day to make up work for every class period day absent. Example: Student is absent on Gold Day (Monday), student returns to class on the next Gold Day (Wednesday), make-up work from Monday is due Friday.

  4. One day late will result in the deduction of 15 points, two days late will result in the deduction of 30 points.  

  5. All assignments completed on the student’s computer must be saved on the student’s Z-Drive even if a hard copy is turned in. Without saving on the Z-Drive the highest grade a student can receive will be a 50. 

  6. Some daily assignments, such as drawings, cannot be made up. Therefore, a student will be exempt from an assignment. 

Attendance Policy

Students participating in school activities should make every effort to obtain and complete any assignments prior to their absence. Assignment arrangements should be discussed with the teacher of record prior to the student activity absence.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
